John Lennon sang “all you need is love”. I don’t agree. I think all you really need is trust. If you trust someone… everything is else is possible.

A Scottish dude by the name of George (not Harrison but MacDonald) -- who by the way was a poet, and a writer of fairy tales and fantasy -- wrote a very long time ago, “that it is a greater compliment to be trusted than to be loved”. I agree with that.
This week did not start out on a high note for me. Someone I should have been able to trust, a professional who I needed to put my trust in, let me down in a big way. This is what got me thinking about trust. The importance of trust.
-
This week did not end up on a high note either. I went to a class for the first time in a place that should be one of friendly people types where you feel calm and safe. Instead, it turned out to be a place of strict regimens, way-rushed, and rudeness. It made me uncomfortable. I don’t trust these people. And, I won’t go back.
-
In between and on other side of these two events I met people who I do trust.
-
Some were strangers who I met for a fleeting instant, who held the door and I passed through it, grateful (you see, I trusted that they wouldn’t let it go on me – and they didn’t). Some other strangers spoke a friendly word, gave a friendly glance, held the elevator, packed my groceries in my cloth bag, asked how my day was – and it made me feel that the world around me was okay, I felt safe, -- I felt trust. And, I believe, -- at least I hope – that they know that they can trust me too… as I held the door, spoke a friendly word, gave a friendly glance, held the elevator, and helped to pack a bag or two… or three.
-
And then there are those non-strangers in my life. Some that come and go. And some who I believe will be here always. The comers and goers, and the ones who will be here always, are all people that I trust with my stories, my secrets, my ups and my downs. And I believe, -- at least I hope – that they know that they can trust me too.
-
All of my good relationships, co-workers, friends and family -- all these relationships have at their beginning – trust. All you need is trust. And out of trust grows love.
-
By the way, I DO love this song – I just think it should say, all you need is trust.

At least, that’s what I think today, and so far.
