Calgary Arts Development hiring: DIRECTOR, ART SPACE INITIATIVES

Calgary Arts Development seeks a dynamic mid-career professional with experience in leading and managing the development of public facilities for this new position in our organization. The ideal candidate will have deep understanding of both public and private property development, and will have experience working with municipal planning and development processes. Previous experience working with artists, arts organizations and/or non-profits is strongly preferred. Augmenting previous success will be a well-developed network of contacts in Calgary’s private sector property development industry. Reporting to President and CEO, the Director, Art Space Initiatives works with the complete Calgary Arts Development team to realize our vision and mission:

In March 2007, Calgary Arts Development published a research report on the current state of art spaces, along with a companion strategy and capital plan to guide the long-term buildout of art spaces in Calgary (available at http://calgaryartsdevelopment.com/spaces). Initiative 3 of this strategy called for Calgary to develop specialized expertise to develop art spaces throughout the city to support and drive the growth of our cultural scene. The successful candidate for this role will lead the next stages of our growth, building upon a base of momentum that has been established over the past three years that has resulted in several new spaces moving forward, with exciting new opportunities on the horizon.

Primary responsibilities include:

• Leading the development of an action plan to take advantage of the opportunities for art space development identified and championed by CADA to date;
• Crafting a vision and strategic plan for the growth and development of Art Space Initiatives as a line of business for CADA;
• Establishing a deep and wide base of knowledge about property development dynamics in Calgary;
• Building a strong relationship with City of Calgary staff in the areas of planning and development, arts and culture, and capital development and funding;
• Building a strong relationship with federal and provincial colleagues charged with infrastructure development in the arts, heritage and municipalities;
• Identifying and activating opportunities for the private sector to use incentives to include art spaces in residential and commercial developments;
• Identifying and working with City staff and elected representatives to change or bring on additional incentives and mechanisms to facilitate art space development;
• Facilitating collaboration between and among artists and arts organizations to enable multi-tenant facilities to be developed and/or operated;
• Identifying “out of the box” mechanisms to finance and/or fund the development of art spaces.

The successful candidate is highly motivated, a strong communicator, thrives in a changing environment, is excited about serving a diverse range of artists and arts organizations from all disciplines. The Director, Art Space Initiatives is a new role, part of an energetic team that includes one junior staff person dedicated to supporting art space development.
