Hunger in affluent York Region is unacceptable, but it is a fact – hidden by shame and denial. None of us should feel comfortable about this. So, let’s shed some light on it!
-
Spiritfest is an all-day FREE family festival designed to highlight the importance of creativity – the ultimate renewable resource – in feeding people. Dulcimerhead has again gathered an amazing collection of artists, healers, and performers to raise money and awareness of the York Region Food Network.
-
Dulcimerhead (www.myspace.com/dulcimerhead1) is a local band who hosted the first Spiritfest festival in April 2009, bringing people together to create art, participate in drumming, and experience workshops and storytelling – all activities directed toward emphasizing one key message: human creativity and community are the keys to building a society where everyone feels valued and has the basic necessities.
-
As Dulcimerhead sings: “If you can make something out of nothing, you’re already there.” Creativity in the form of community gardens, gleaning programs, cooking classes, school backpack programs and fundraising are just some of the ways the York Region Food Network creates solutions to a growing crisis to feed people. Together, we have enough creativity to solve any problems we face as a community.
-
Program of events is below. Highlights include:
Meditation and yoga classes
Story-telling: “Stone Soup”
Georgina Drum Circle and “Open Mike” for poetry and music
